US HISTORY 11

Course Description

The purpose of the course is to present students with learning opportunities that will allow them to have a deep understanding of 20th century U.S. History. From there students will be able to consider how their lives are connected to the circumstances and people of this turbulent and prolific time period. As historical stewards students will detect patterns and consider the social, political, economic and moral implications of decisions made by the government and by individuals. Students will investigate primary documents in order to understand American values and the American experience.

In addition to content, a variety of historical thinking skills will be taught. These skills not only will assist students in dissecting and making sense of U.S. history, but they are transferable to other courses, even those outside of the history discipline. These skills include cause and effect, perspective taking, continuity and change, establishing historical significance, using primary source evidence and understanding the ethical dimensions of history.
